Cherry Bomb at Goros

Move aside Barbie, pink has found a new home.

I was fortunate enough to have moved to Sydney just in time to catch the tail-end of Goros’s annual Sakura spectacular Cherry Bomb. The Surry Hills homage to Japan served up a sensory explosion of pop-culture and pink from April 19 to May 27 to celebrate the Cherry Blossom season, seamlessly transforming the venue into a springtime utopia while maintaining its typically effortless cool all the while.

Stepping inside Goros truly felt like being transported above the equator, but I couldn’t decide if I was in the midst of a cherry orchard or nestled inside a cosy izakaya within Golden Gai. Either way, it was a welcome vacation. If you didn’t manage to score a reservation to Cherry Bomb, you wouldn’t be the only one. The venue was full to the brim and kept a lively atmosphere all night, with a steady stream of both walk-ins and booked patrons keeping the DJ company on the dancefloor.

Cherry Bomb was offering a limited-edition food and cocktail menu which did not disappoint. The signature cocktail, aptly named Cherry Blossom was exotically delicious, meanwhile Watermelon Poppu was refreshingly sweet with the assistance of popping pearls – which made the drinking experience an absolute delight. For those visiting outside Cherry Bomb season, don’t despair! Their regular selection of drinks include an entire array of alcoholic bubble tea that look just as fun to drink. And for the designated driver? Enjoy a variety of Ramu soda with popping pearls to stay immersed in the cultural façade. The pink chicken katsu sushi looked pretty as a picture on the plate, and while I was sceptical to ingest the pink-tinted rolls (which were generously portioned and served with wasabi, soy and pickled ginger), they encased crispy katsu chicken that was flavoursome and moreish. The gyoza and Takoyaki, which can also be purchased on any regular day, were equally as delicious.

Between the limited-edition menu and the regular menu, I was spoilt for choice and couldn’t try half of what I wanted to, but Goros definitely warrants a second trip. With karaoke competitions held regularly, arcade machines at the ready and menu specials throughout the week, Goros really does feel like an authentic piece of Japan in the heart of Sydney. I highly recommend keeping up to date with their latest and giving it a look-in on your next night out.
